Sweden at Home in Lely

A delightful family from Sweden contacted me to help with this new construction project.
The owners and I designed their home entirely via the internet. The process started in April and was completed in December. We spoke on the phone just a few times and became great friends. I met the family in person when they arrived for a holiday visit and they saw their new home for the first time.

We created a design concept of casual modern with clean lines and a touch of minimalism that reflects the Swedish design aesthetic.

The foyer has a sense of playfulness with a patchwork kilim rug, crafted from antique rugs that have been recycled and a kilim-wrapped chest from Andrew Martin.

Bold colors of orange and red were used in the rugs in the living room and dining room as a base for the neutral palette of the furniture. The living room rug was discovered at a gallery in Key West, and the dining room was custom designed with nine yarn colors from a company in California.

In the living room the upholstery was selected from Thayer Coggin; a pair of “Hoop” chairs covered in a zebra print steal the show. Custom shelves for the electronic components were finished with car paint, a reflective and durable finish. Sterling silver pierced art chargers were converted into light fixtures in the dining room. The owner brought these to the U.S. in her suitcase!

The Master Bedroom is a blue and white study with an ikat pattern duvet fabric and ikat rugs.
The Metropolitan bed is from Lillian August. Sand dollars are encased in a shadow box from Natural Curiosities. Rich dark wood floors give the Master Bedroom an organic essence.

The kids’ rooms have a colorful beach feeling with white washed furniture, hemp beds and striped woven rugs from Dash and Albert. Maps of Florida and the United States are a great way for the children to learn about their new vacation destination.

The owners fell in love with Naples, Florida for its abundant light and sunshine. They live in a country that has a winter season of dark days, and they are avid golfers. The lanai offers diverse areas for dining and relaxing, and a fabulous view of the golf course. This charming family has created their own personal resort for the pleasure of friends and family.
